I get this a lot:  How does your real estate developer background prepare you for launching Perch?

Fair enough! Perch is a strategic home planning and renovation service that helps homeowners clarify needs, steps, budget and vision before even picking up the phone to call a pro. It’s that home planning service to snag before you engage other home renovation professionals — and it doesn’t really exist out there (besides Perch). 

My background for this home renovation expertise is in my work as a residential real estate developer. Partnered with my husband, we have assessed hundreds of homes and brought the final cut of those successfully to the real estate market with our business, Nicholwood.

Real estate developing, as we do it, is investing in a residential property and “developing” it, aka restoring/reconfiguring it to earn us a profit margin when we resell it.  For us in particular, we also require that it adds meaningful value to the neighborhood and to the legacy of that particular structure. 

We honor the life of that place and the future it will have.  That will also mean that while a nod to the past is great, we need it to be warm when it’s cold out, have outlets where you need them -- basically to bring places that have become unloved into a modern era.  My historian husband, Chris, often says: “I always want to restore something so that it’s valuable enough that it’s not cost effective to wipe it out.”
